THIEL WANTS TO SEAL THE DEAL IN 2017
PORTAGE, Wis. (May 12, 2017) – With the backing of his newly formed team – Brooks and Thiel Motorsports – Jordan Thiel had a breakout season with the TUNDRA Super Late Model Series Powered by Wisconsin Potatoes in 2016. This season Theil thinks his team is ready to secure some wins, and maybe more.
“We’re all real psyched up for it,” Thiel said of a potential first TUNDRA win. “We all can feel it. At the end of last year we could feel it. It was there, but we just needed a little more preparation and maybe a little more driver preparation. I think we’ve got that this year.”
Thiel came very close to securing his first Super Late Model win on two occasions in 2016. He led over half the laps at both Round Three at LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway and Round Five at Golden Sands Speedway. Thiel also made a late charge to secure a Third Place finish in the season finale at Jefferson in September. That finish propelled him to a Third Place finish in the overall TUNDRA standings.
“It was huge. It just kind of put the cherry on top of the whole year for all we had done as a team,” Thiel said. “It felt great to be running up front and be competitive. It was huge for us to end the season on a high note so we could pick up this season on a high note.”
The formation of the team came when Thiel partnered with Chris and Mike Brooks prior to the beginning of 2016. Along with Wyatt Brooks the team was able to field two cars at every TUNDRA race. All in all, Thiel was happy with the team’s performance.
“It was a good year for us, our first full year together as Brooks and Thiel Motorsports,” Thiel said. “I’ve known those guys for a while so it wasn’t a huge learning curve adjusting to a new team. We clicked right away, so it was pretty good.”
“This year I guess the biggest thing is the teamwork that we have and everyone has come prepared to bust their butts in the shop. That’s been the biggest help to our program.”
With several strong runs to keep in mind from last season, Thiel keeps his goal simple in trying to win his first TUNDRA race. However, there is a bigger picture and a larger potential for the team after Thiel’s Third Place finish in the season standings.
“For us, we try not to look at points, per se, but it’s always nice to fall back on being in a good points position,” Thiel said. “The competition is stiff in TUNDRA. You have to be on top of your game every race or you can fall off really easily.”
Perhaps one of the toughest race for TUNDRA Travelers looms in this Saturday’s Krolls West Round One. Not only does Thiel feel up for the challenge, he embraces it. While he may have spent much of his time racing at Golden Sands the past few seasons, Wisconsin International Raceway is still the closest to his home in Darboy.
“I consider Kaukauna my home town and I’ve been going there forever,” Thiel said. “To run well and be competitive would be astronomical.”
From that point, another strong run at LaCrosse and some solid runs the rest of the season could put Thiel at the top of the standings. It could make for a fun season in the Brooks and Thiel camp.
“In general, we’re always happy to run with the TUNDRA boys,” Thiel said. We have a good time.”
In 2017 Thiel is sponsored by Wisconsin Potato and Vegetable Growers Association, Central Door Solutions, Hammerski Farms, Swift, Furo Graffix, Wimmer 3D, and J&S Design.
The 2017 season for the TUNDRA Super Late Model Series Powered by Wisconsin Potatoes begins Saturday, May 13 with Kroll’s West Round One at Wisconsin International Raceway. TUNDRA will be joined by the Midwest Truck Series and Sportsman division. Qualifying is scheduled for noon with racing to begin at 2 p.m.
